Australian Contemporary art in Old Havana

Australian Contemporary art in Old Havana

Havana, Cuba, January 30, - An artistic and cultural aboriginal Australian exhibition, which can be of great interest for holidaymakers in Havana, was inaugurated in the Salon Blanco (White Hall) of the Convent of San Francisco de Asis in Old Havana by Mrs. Katrina Cooper, Ambassador of Australia in Cuba who valued the event like an important moment in the cultural relationships between her country and the Island. After highlighting that "the impressive of this exhibition is the mixture of the traditional thing and the contemporary thing, their brilliant and vivacious colors allusive to the desert and the different tonalities of an exposed nature to the rains", the diplomat thanked the people and institutions that supported its realization, in a special way, the Office of the Historian of the City. By his side, Eusebio Leal, Havana's Historian, transmitted its gratitude to the Australian Chancellery and Mrs. Katrina Cooper as "it is the first exhibition of its type that comes to Cuba" and referred to the stay in Havana of artists Maree Clarke y Wayne Quilliam, "who return us the autochthonous presence of the towns, specially of a so old and important town of the remote past, as an almost virginal print of a pristine humanity as it is the Australian aborigine". The three samples on contemporary Australian art and its more traditional manifestations inaugurated in the Historical Center of the city are integrated to the cultural itinerant project, Australia Journey, which, organized by the government of that country in coordination with the Historian office, will remain during one month in Havana. The Balgo Hills exposition gathers 26 works of 18 outstanding creators of that Australian community of hardly 500 inhabitants that present allusive histories to the traditions of the aboriginal people and the way they have been perpetuated. Wayne Quilliam exposes in the north side of the mentioned Convent a group of pictures with topic aborigine; its images have been described by experts as "the visual essence of Australia indigenous", while Clarke exhibits in the Carmen Montilla gallery 14 pictures and an installation about ceremonial rites of native towns of that country. The activities dedicated to Australia in Old Havana coincided with the National Day of that big continental island and also include a sample of 60 Australian currencies and notes that is open to the public in the Numismatic Museum placed in the busy Obispo street.
