Beijing 2008: Truly Exceptional Olympic Games

Beijing 2008: Truly Exceptional Olympic Games

HAVANA, Cuba, August, 24- Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee described Beijing's 29th Olympic Games as "truly exceptional", as he gave his closing statement of the event, at the Birds 'Nest National Stadium. "The world has learned more about China and China has also learned about the world," said Rogge who thanked the Chinese people for the hosting of the games. He said, he wished all to remember the Olympic Games and the love given by the people of China, during the event that stressed friendship bonds among the peoples. Rogge said the success of the Olympic Games serve as an encouragement for the upcoming Paralympics Games, to soon open in Beijing. An outstanding and colorful ceremony, which included traditional music and costumes, offered amazing performances like a tower of human figures, and gymnasts who flew high on the stadium illuminated by streams of light, as the packed audience observed with delight. Shortly after Rogge concluded the flag of the United Kingdom was hoisted to welcome the upcoming Olympics in Britain in 2012. As part of the symbolic representation, the public enjoyed the song "Wanna whole lotta love" of the British rock band Led Zeppelin, as its emblematic band member Jimmy Page played his guitar in the center of the stadium. Lots of fireworks illuminated the night of Sunday, August 24 in Beijing as well as the faces of hundreds of thousands in the public who enjoyed with emotion, during 16 days, the outstanding performances of athletes from 204 Olympic committees of the world. China took the first position in the standing of medals with 51 gold, 21 silver, 28 bronze, in all 100 medals, which reveals that the Asian country is an Olympic Power, observers agree. Cuba finished in the 28th position with 2 gold, 11 silver and 11 bronze in what Cuban experts considered a result obtained with a big effort. Notwithstanding their efforts, the Cuban athletes did not reached the goals they really expected to garner; but they took their country to the fifth best position in the Americas, after The United States, Jamaica, Canada and Brazil.
