Books and Art Close Cuban Summer

Havana, August, 29- Streets of Havana's historical-cultural center are filled with books on Friday during the festival Readings Facing the Sea where fine arts, music and history are meeting to celebrate the end of summer holidays in Cuba. The program includes book readings, theater shows and disguise parties for children, apart from the traditional books sale from La Punta through the Harbor Avenue to the Plaza de Armas in Old Havana. Havana city historian Eusebio Leal is leading a tour called The Havana of Cecilia Valdes, 19th-century character of the novel by Cuban writer Cirilo Villaverde (1812-1894), to recall the Cuban slave society with its many social conflicts. The tour will close the 8th edition of Rutas y Andares (Routes and Walks), a project organized by cultural institutions in Old Havana to encourage Cuban families to visit museums every summer. Fine arts will be sold during the festival. The attendants will find poster reproductions of a work by Cuban painter Alexis Leyva (Kcho) and engraves by contemporary Cuban artists, along with a set of 10 postcards with poems by Nicolas Guillen and illustrated by Cuban painters like Eduardo Roca (Choco), Pedro Abascal and Diana Balboa. A concert of young troubadours singing Cuban Silvio Rodriguez' songs will close the festival sponsored by the Instituto Cubano del Libro (Cuban Book Institute), the Union de Jovenes Comunistas (Young Communist Union) and the office of the Havana city historian.
