Close to 20,000 people evacuated in eastern provinces given proximity of Gustav

Around 20,000 people have been evacuated in eastern Cuba this Tuesday given the proximity of Hurricane Gustav, which has now weakened to tropical storm status but with the possibility of increasing in intensity again. Some 90 foreign tourists were transferred from the coast of Santiago de Cuba (southeast) to a hotel in the city. Santiago de Cuba, one of the six eastern provinces to have been mobilized, has evacuated almost 11,000 people to more secure places, such as the homes of relatives and friends or public shelters providing food, medical attention and other facilities, reported the National News Agency. In Las Tunas, 2,300 people have been evacuated, according to last night's television news broadcast, which also reported that at least 1,700 people had been evacuated in the central province of Ciego de Avila. Exact figures were not given for the thousands who have been evacuated in Holguin, Guantanamo, Granma and Camagey. All these provinces . which the Civil Defense organization has placed on "alert" . are urgently overseeing the transfer of livestock to high ground, the preservation of buildings and resources, and the cleaning of the drainage system. After passing over the westernmost region of Haiti, Gustav left one person dead and produced heavy rainfall and fierce winds. The rest of Cuba is closely following the evolution of the hurricane which could intensify as it advances through the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea.
