Cuba Para-Olympians for Dignity

Beijing, Aug 26, Honor and improvement are top Cuban goals for the 13th Paralympics, to be broadcast on the island. Jose Luis Rivas, vice president of the Cuban National Sports and Recreation Institute (INDER), said all 32 athletes wish to win a medal and improve previous marks and ranking. In welcoming the delegation at Casa Cuba, next to the Cuban embassy in Beijing, Ambassador Carlos M. Pereira said "their presence attests to Cuba's feats in massive practice and social equality." The athletes represent 13 Cuban provinces' Physically Impaired, Blind and Short Sighted Associations (ACLIFIM) and most are University first year students. Cuban will compete in weight lifting, swimming, and table tennis as well as the better ranked athletics and judo. Rivas said expectations match the athletes' four-year training to boost Paralympics marks in qualification tournaments.
