Cuba beats holland in women's volley masters tournament

HAVANA, Cuba, June 5, - The Cuban national women's volleyball team beat Holland on Wednesday in the opening day of the annual Volley Masters Tournament that began in the Swiss city of Montreux with the participation of six national squads. The Cuban team dominated the game from the very beginning and downed last year's Grand Prix champions in straight sets 25-16, 25-14 and 25-21. In the other games yesterday, Italy edged Germany 3-2 and China also took a 3-2 hard-fought victory over Serbia. In 2007, China, Cuba and Serbia made podium in Montreux followed by Serbia, Germany, Turkey, Russia and Poland. This tournament is part of these teams' preparation for their main event this year: the Olympic Games in Beijing, China, next August. The 12 squads that will participate in the Olympic competition are: China, Italy, Brazil, United States, Algeria, Kazakhstan, Russia, Cuba, Venezuela, Poland, Serbia and Japan. In the second day of the Volley Masters event on Thursday, Cuba faces the strong Chinese team.
