The Paradisus Rio de Oro Hotel and Spa has once again been included in the list of best Cuba hotels, this time by Neckerman, a German tour operator owned by the international travel group Thomas Cook. Along with Cayo Santa Maria-based, Melia Las Dunas, this 5 star luxury accommodation facility received a Primo Award which is given by the Central European travel agency to 100 hotels in the world on a yearly basis. This isn't the first time the hotel is included in top ten listings. For three years in a row the Paradisus Rio de Oro, located at the north of the province of Holguin, has been rated the absolute best among Cuba hotels in Trip Advisor's online travel community and placed among the five best hotels in the Caribbean by Monarch, a Canadian online travel community. It has also been well reviewed by Virgin Holidays' clients and other tour operators from the United Kingdom, being the only hotel in Cuba that draws that amount of international attention and which everybody is speaking well of. But even when this luxury hotel appears to be doing everything well, some clients believe the experience at the resort is all about the destination itself and the value for money that Holguin holidays in Guardalavaca offer. One of Cuba's fastest growing holiday destinations and one of the most important for many reasons; the province of Holguin, and the beach resort of Guardalavaca more specifically, lies on the northern coast of southern Cuba. Its long coastline, from Gibara in the West of Moa in the East, surrounds the Bay of Nipe and provides multiple opportunities for beach-loving tourists to enjoy the warmth of its waters and its lush scenery. The name Guardalavaca (which in Spanish translates to "guard the cow") is said to originate from the days of the Spanish treasure fleets and pirates. It is suggested that, as this coastline represented the last "jumping off" point for sailing ships passing between Cuba and Florida and heading for Europe, Guardalavaca acted as a last pick-up for fresh cattle meat and water. Frequent raids by pirates prompted the Spanish to stockade the pastureland around the beach area. The provincial capital of Holguin is just under an hour's drive away from Guardalavaca, through interesting, hilly countryside, sugar plantations and steep, small, conical mountain peaks (pitons). It has one of the island's main airports where daily Cuba flights from Europe and the Americas arrive every day. Neckerman is represented in the island by Cubatur, an incoming travel agency with almost 50 years of experience assisting national and international tourists enjoying Cuba holidays in the island's eastern side.
