Cuban Boxers Secure 8 Medals in Beijing

Beijing, Aug 20, - The Cuban boxing team secured eight bronze medals at Beijing-2008 Olympics quarter-finals through Andry Laffita (51 kg) and Emilio Correa (75). Laffita defeated Puerto Rican McWilliams Arroyo 11-2 while Correa ousted Uzbek Elshod Rasulov by 9-7 ring at the Workers" Gymn. Neither Venezuelan Alfonso Blanco nor Ecuadorian Carlos Gongora made it to the round of medals. Blanco lost to Irish Darren Sutherland 1-11 and Gongora to Indian Vijender Kumar 4-9, so Latin America lost three medals in this weight. British James Degale (75 kg) was the big surprise in defeating 8-3 Kazak Bakhtiar Artayev, gold medalist and winner of the Val Barker Cup to the best boxer in Athens 2004.
