Cuban Women Volley, 4th in the World

Beijing, August, 23- Cuban women volleyball team lost the bronze medal of the 2008 Beijing Olympics to China, though it is still one of the top volleyball teams worldwide. Cuban head coach Antonio Perdomo told Prensa Latina that a fourth place, reaching semi-finals and discussing the medals are signs of the quality of the female team. Minutes after the match against the Chinese Perdomo said the six first nations of the tournament were equally able to get the gold medal. The Cuban team moved to quarter-finals undefeated, won the game against Serbia but lost in semi-finals and in the bronze medal discussion against the United States and China, teams they had already defeated in the qualifying stage. Perdomo said the weak point of the Cuban team during the match against the United States was concentration, and during the bronze medal discussion the Chinese did everything right and took advantage of the technical faults, lack of concentration and anxiety of the Cuban team. Cuban captain Yumilka Ruiz said their rivals were good and regretted the fact they could not win a medal when they were able to. According to Perdomo, the Cuban is among the top volleyball teams worldwide because it has shown some results during the last year with the gold medal won in the Pan-American Games and the regional and continental tournaments, plus the second place in the Grand Prix. Before leaving 2008 Beijing Olympics with his sight set on the future Perdomo said the fourth place for a nation of 11,000 000 inhabitants is a good performance.
