Cubans Shaking the World with Their Salsa

HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 21,- The musical "Viva Cuba," created and produced by Yolena Alonso with musical support from her father Pachito Alonso, was successfully staged at the 2008 International Zaragoza Expo, in Spain. After three years of successful performances in Germany and China, this summer the show is being staged in Spain, where it was ranked as one of the best five shows of the mega-fair of Zaragoza. The Alonsos created the musical based on the Cuban tradition of stage shows with roots in the Tropicana Troupe, the National Folkloric Ensemble and modern dance. The production demonstrates the force and authenticity of Cuban culture, with its blend of son, rumba, mambo, bolero, conga and timba, says Granma newspaper. The show was highlighted in the Spanish press, which praised the quality of the young dancers, the music of the group Pachito Alonso y los Kini Kini, and the soundtrack by Edesio Alejandro. This, together with the lighting, set and costume design, reaffirms the cultural identity of the Caribbean island, reported local newspapers. Before traveling to Zaragoza, the musical was staged in Pamplona, where the Diario de Navarra daily featured an article headlined, "All the Rhythm of Cuba." The story recalled the musical lineage of the Alonsos, starting with legendary bolero singer Pacho Alonso, who was also creator of the pilon rhythm.
