Finland chooses Cuba as holiday destination of the year

Havana, January 29, - Cuba was elected as Holiday Destination of the Year by the Finnish Association of Journalists of Helsinki, who considered the country's nature kindness and the development of its tourist industry. A statement provided by the Cuban Ministry of Tourism (Mintur), added that during the recently concluded Matka tourist fair, the mentioned professional entity granted Cuba one of its diplomas, which annually distinguishes the most remarkable thing happened in the holiday sector. That meeting is the most important of its kind in the Nordic countries and the recognition that come from it have an important impact on travel choices for many people. Precisely, among the expected categories appeared that designating the country, city or region as a Destination of the Year, whose jury unanimously chose Cuba. The basis of the award was in charge of jury chairman Juha Roiha, a well-known radio and television journalist of that country who argued that history in Cuba shows different aspects that go from colonial cities to splendid beaches, passing through the amazing classic car traffic in the capital and feeling "the revolutionary spirit of Che Guevara that is still present in the daily life of the people." In Cuba, she said, "you can travel following the footsteps of the revolutionaries, learning about Ernest Hemingway's favorite bars and enjoy a Mojito". She also praised the Hotel Nacional with its legendary air of movie stars, and Varadero as genuine places for holidaying. The honorary diploma was received by the ambassador of Cuba in Helsinki, Sergio Gonzalez, during a ceremony attended by the staff of the Cuban tourism office for the Nordic countries headed by its director, Tamara Gigato. During that meeting, Gonzalez thanked the distinction and highlighted the development of the Cuban holiday industry, which closed 2011 with the arrival of more than 2.7 million holidaymakers. The Finnish Travel Journalists Association is an institution with 40 years of experience, and their nominations for the different world tourism segments are taken as reference by all industry players, concluded the note.
