From England, Mike Leigh in the Havana Film Festival

Havana, November 19, - With prizes in Cannes and Venice, and nominations and awards in the Oscars, arrives the filmography of the British filmmaker Mike Leigh at the International Festival of the New Latin American Cinema, which in its 30th edition, will tribute him with a retrospective of the most significant work of one of the most important film directors of the contemporary English cinema. Through films like "The Secret of Vera Drake", where he approached the subject of the abortion, the filmmaker not only impacted the society in Great Britain and woke up the controversy, but received the unanimous applause of the international critic, consolidating him as one of the most audacious directors of English language and reaffirming the poetic of a race which had already reached praises in international scenes with his film Secrets and Lies. Recognized by his satire and irony, he burst strongly into the seventh art when in the second half of the 80's, he directed "Great Ambitions", film awarded in the Festival of Venice and that located him as one of the more critics voices of the British society, when entering into the social and existentialist conflicts of common people, in the times of Margaret Thatcher. Later on and with accentuated presence of sarcasm and absurdity, he filmed "Life is Sweet", "Defenseless" and also Topsy-Turvy, about the composers W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, which was also nominated to the Academy Awards (Oscars) in the category of best original script (which was responsibility of the director). The film would receive two statues, for best make-up and best artistic direction. However, it was with his film "With All or Nothing" and mostly with that stirring movie that is "The Secret of Vera Drake", that he would be recognized like an author of cult within the Anglo-Saxon cinema. Mike Leigh is a man of the audio-visual who has produced also for television and whose roots are in the theater, as he demonstrated when taking the play "Two Thousand Years" to the stage of the Royal National Theatre of London.
