Havana holidays' provider celebrates 18th anniversary

Last 6th January, Habaguanex S.A. celebrated 18 years of existence as a provider of cultural Havana holidays in the old part of Cuba's capital city. With the slogan "Feel Old Havana" (Sentir la Habana Vieja), this tourism group was founded in 1994 by the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana (OHC) with the aim of organising tourism operations in the old town and restoring the area's aged beauty. Nowadays, Habaguanex manages 21 Havana hotels, a travel agency named San Cristobal, and more than 40 cafes and restaurants located within the boundaries of the old part of Havana. The company which was named after the ancient Amerindian chief, who ruled over this territory before the arrival of Spanish conquerors, is the only one in Cuba with a sustainable agenda. Almost 90 per cent of this firm's revenue is re-invested automatically in projects to maintain and renovate parts of Old Havana, whether in profitable ventures or social initiatives. La Habana Vieja (Old Havana) is bounded by one natural feature - the narrow mouth and portside of the Bay of Havana, and the man-made line created by the location of ancient Havana's city wall. However, in recent years, OHC's projects have covered the old town and the part of the municipality of Centro Habana that stretches along the Malecon seawall bordering the modern neighbourhood of Vedado. The city was founded on 16th November 1519, when the first mass was performed in the Plaza de Armas (Arms Square). Christened "San Cristobal de la Habana" at the time of its foundation, the city was established as be the base of Spanish Colonisation of the Americas given its strategic geographic position. Ever since, this historic site became the centre of the former Spanish government, home of cultural projects and religious processions as well as the point of departure of escorted city tours. Declared World Heritage Site in 1982, Havana has become one of the most popular holiday destinations in Cuba over the years. According to Saray Moreira Urra, Director of Public Relations of Habaguanex, at the moment the company is keeping up the hard work to expand across the old town. Some of the company's hotels have been awarded by national and international organisations more than once; such is the case of hotels Saratoga and Telegrafo. "During 2012, Habaguanex will be participating with a renewed offer of Havana holidays in the International Tourism Fair (FitCuba) where we will present a new product called "Cigars in Old Havana", an effort to rescue the ancient traditions of smoking cigars anywhere in the old town", said Moreira.
