Hurricane Gustav Makes History

Havana, September 1st, -The devastating Hurricane Gustav appears to have set a new record for maximum wind gusts in Cuba with the 340 km/h (211 mph) registered at the Paso Real de San Diego, Pinar del Rio station on Saturday. Cuban Institute of Meteorology archives show that these are the strongest winds ever recorded in Cuba, but experts say that some of the worst hurricanes of the 19th century and first decades of the 20th could have reached similar wind speeds. The strongest winds recorded before Gustav was from hurricane Fox in October 1952 with 280 km/h winds registered at Cayo Guano del Este, south of the province of Cienfuegos. Another hurricane in October 1944 brought wind gusts reaching 262 km/h in Havana, although some estimates believe those winds may have reached above 300 km/h. The most intense hurricane ever reported in Cuba was called the San Francisco de Borja Storm which hit Havana on October 10-11, 1846. The storm had a minimum central pressure of 916 millibars, the lowest in the island's history.
