IBAF: Baseball Stars to Participate in Olympic Games

Havana, Jun 25 (Prensa Latina) Harvey Schiller, president of the International Baseball Amateur Federation, (IBAF) stated Wednesday he is working hard for the presence of the best baseball players in the world in the Olympic Games. "We are working with pro organizations from Japan, South Korea and the US for them to let the best baseball players attend tournaments," Schiller said in a press round when finishing a three-day visit to this capital. Schiller regarded the conversations with Cuban sport authorities as fruitful, and he analyzed the possible return of baseball to the program of the Olympic Games. The future of baseball, a sport coming to the Olympic program in Barcelona, Spain, in 1992, will be once again analyzed in the meeting of the International Olympic Committee in October 2009, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Schiller said that IBAF and the more than 100 countries forming it are making many actions for the return of baseball. He referred to the struggle against doping and the proposals for changes in the regulations to reduce duration of the baseball matches, aspects that might increase discipline possibilities for the return of the sport to the Olympic program. He also specified the intention to take the practice of baseball in regions of Asia, Africa, Middle East and South America. He concluded by saying that he wanted to take advantage of the relations of Cuba with other countries of the region and its experience to increase efforts for the development of baseball in all the regions of the world.
