Juan Formell Wins World Music Award

Varadero, Jun 16 (Prensa Latina) Juan Formell, director of Cuban famous musical group Los Van Van, received the world award of the World Entertainment Organization Sunday night in the closure of the Varadero Musical Festival. The award is given to live personalities with the merit to be useful to the history of music in the planet, and Formell received the award from the hands of Danieo Cuxac, director of the WEO. Formell told Cuban News Agency (CNA) he was quite surprised since WEO is an organization that chose 10 world music personalities to grant the award to just three of them. The official award granting ceremony will take place in Congo in August, and Formell will have the pleasure to receive it together with French singer Charles Aznavour and US composer and musician Quincy Jones. Varadero 2008 concluded with the presence of Buena Fe (Cuba), Explosion Nortena (Mexico) and Los Van Van before thousands of spectators coming from all the municipalities of the province of Matanzas and adjacent provinces. There was homage to rumba, with the participation of Los Munequitos de Matanzas and Pigmees of Congo, with ancestral chants and songs in defense of the strong relations between the Cuban and the African culture Formell reasserted the Festival will return next year, hoping for greater participation of foreign groups, and more space for other kinds of music, such as jazz, rumba and others.
