Mariel to become Cuba's largest industrial port

Mariel to become Cuba's largest industrial port

Located at about 50 kilometres west of the capital, Mariel is the second most important port in Cuba after Havana's . The new development expects to place it as one of the largest in the Caribbean. The site's growth includes the construction of 700 hundred meters of docks. It is estimated that the capacity will increase to up to one million containers per year. The decision for this expansion serves a second purpose. In the close near future all industrial facilities from Havana's port will be transferred to Mariel in order to transform the capital's harbour into a tourist centre. Tourism traffic to the nation's capital has been on the rise for the last decade. By 2016, this pattern is expected to continue influenced by the positive evolution of cruise ships operations and the foreseen U.S. liberalisation on Cuba travel. This initiative offers new light to Mariel's old town. With the new seaport development Cuba Holidays will combine the attractiveness of colonial history with the modernity that the entrance of modern vessels to the harbour involves. Tourism development plans have been careful thought out to ensure harmony between the old and the new parts and increase occupational levels of Havana hotels. In the meantime, a sophisticated highway and railroad infrastructure is being incorporated to Mariel's port. The terminal will become the centre of logistics for offshore oil exploration and the location for cargo storage facilities as well as a marine technical school that will provide training in many specialties linked to the port's operations. According to local news agency Prensa Latina (Latin Press) the First Vice President of Cuba, Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, claims that the Cuban government is paying special attention to the works in the area given the benefits they will bring to the economy in the long run. Singapore port operator PSA International has announced its interest in managing the container terminal. The company has already signed a contract with the Cuban side. Along with the current works already taking place, this agreement will turn Mariel into the largest industrial port of the Caribbean. By 2015, the place will be in optimum conditions to receive larger ships given it has been designed taking into account the Panama Canal's expansion plans. The entire project has a cost of $800 million. So far a sum of $400 million has been employed in the first phase, estimated to be completed by 2014.
