Solidarity Continues to Increase Across Cuba with Areas Hit by Hurricane Gustav

Havana, September 3 .-- Electrical line crews from several unaffected areas of Cuba are helping in the recovery of the power system in Pinar del Rio and Isle of Youth, the two areas most damaged by Hurricane Gustav on Saturday. More than 100 workers from Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba and Villa Clara are supporting Pinar del Rio's efforts to reestablish the electricity services, while a crew from central Camaguey has been working on the Isle of Youth since Monday. The number of collaborators is expected to increase in the following days depending on the situation of each affected locality. Akdelay Ledouen, head of the workers brigade from Sagua la Grande, said his crew expressed their commitment to stay in the affected areas as long as needed. Meanwhile, the fifth plane loaded with food and water for the hurricane victims landed on Isla de la Juventud on Tuesday. The director of the Rafael Cabrera Montelier airport, Juan Corrales, told ACN that airplanes with food have been arriving to the island since Monday. Corrales said the airport suffered serious damage in particular to the control tower, which left the terminal cut off. In related news, Russia will send the first of four airplanes with humanitarian aid to Cuba on Monday, as announced by the Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations of that country, according to Itar-Tass. The aircrafts will carry tents for at least 5,000 people, building materials, food and other basic items for hurricane victims, said Irina Andrianova, head of the information office of the Ministry.
