The number of tourists enjoying Cuba holidays surpassed 2.7 million in 2011

Cuba's tourism industry experienced another successful year in terms of the growth of tourist arrivals. Although no official statistics have been published yet reporting the exact number of tourists who took Cuba holidays in 2011, leading experts' estimations indicate that it has surpassed the 2.7 million figure, as it had been forecasted in previous months. According to a statement released by Manuel Marrero Cruz, Head of the Ministry of Tourism, during a meeting of the Cuban Parliament; the number of tourists who arrived to the island in 2011 has set a new record, outnumbering the results of 2010 with outstanding numbers of arrivals registered from countries like Argentina, Russia, and Mexico. Alongside to those nations, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany and Spain continued to be the top senders of visitors to Cuba during the past year as well as the United States of America despite its government's restrictive policy on Cuba travel. In addition, the contribution of other nations from Latin America such as Chile, Colombia and Peru has been fundamental to the overall growth in arrivals and improving hotel's occupancy in the off-peaks seasons. Marrero also spoke about the past and future challenges of the island's tourist industry, referring to the need of increasing the sector's competitiveness in the international travel and tourism market by diversifying tourism supply at both ends, hospitality and visitor attractions. He added that it was essential to the island to "increase the standards of service quality in our facilities offering the best of our history and traditions, with the joviality and hospitality of our welcoming people". For 2012, more than 2.9 million visitors are expected to book Cuba holidays as a result of a group of marketing actions abroad which include the signing of co-marketing arrangements with tour operators and airlines and the implementation of the advertising campaign "Autentica Cuba" in new cities and countries. Additionally, in the new year, the Ministry of Tourism will focus on "tourist planning through the implementation of an Integral Plan for Tourism Development and short term programmes such as the refurbishing of Cuba hotels, the launching of new tourist products and spatial resizing of holiday zones across the island", said the Minister.
