The restoration of Jagua Castle will begin son

The restoration of the Nuestra Senora de los angeles de Jagua Fortress in Cienfuegos will start soon with the purpose of giving the health back to this stone lady, who is already over 260 years old. The works are designed to restore the woodwork access to the castle that includes a rising bridge, the only one that still works in Cuba. The work will also recover the balconies and stairs that give access to the inner patio and part of the ceiling beam, made out of precious wood, similar to the one used during the construction of the fortress in the XVII century by the Spanish metropolis. Marisol Otero, director of the Fortress Museum, explain in an exclusive interview to this agency that the restoration will also replace the support ad column with concrete beams that last much longer. Those beams are under the main structures of the building and, therefore, they do not interfere with the bicentennial building style. The director added that previous restorations in 1992, 1998 and 2003 used wooden beams, but not the required bronze nails capable of resisting the aggressive sea environment and the beams were damaged once again. Therefore, to use modern elements is needed to have a greater security in the bridge restoration. Otero added that the work will restore also the defensive ditch of the castle with original stones from the same quarry that lies close to the fortress. The Nuestra Senora de los angeles fortress was opened the 12 of March 1745 to avoid the raids of corsairs and pirates in the Jagua bay. Its next restoration will allow visitors and travelers to appreciate the beauty and history of the castle.
