Trinidad under Restoration for its 500 Anniversary

Trinidad under Restoration for its 500 Anniversary

Just two years before the celebration of the 500th anniversary of its foundation by the Spanish conquistadors back in 1514, the colonial town of Trinidad is receiving a makeover with an ambitious preservation programme, conducted by the Cuban Ministries of Culture and Tourism and the Preservation Office in the central province of Sancti Spiritus. The restoration works will be carried everywhere around the city and include houses, cultural institutions and properties of patrimonial value. The new makeover will help maintain and preserve the town's famous architectural attributes in order to attracting foreign visitors that come to admire the city's historical and cultural riches during their Cuba holidays. According to Norberto Carpio, Director of the Preservation Office in this area, the contribution of his institution and that of the Ministries of Culture and Tourism, significantly favour the preservation of heritage in the area and the development of a more cultured and sustainable type of tourism. The 2011 programme included the restoration of areas of tourist and historical interests such as the town of Las Tres Cruces, the small square of El Jigüe Punta Brava Park and the Santa Ana and Mayor y Carrillo Squares. Such emblematic sites have been declared Cultural World Heritage Sites by UNESCO since 1988 and are frequented by travellers passing by during their Cuba holidays as one of the best preserved inhabited urban centres in Latin America. The small town of Trinidad is located in the province of Sancti Spiritus in central Cuba. Sancti Spiritus, Latin for "Holy Spirit," is one of the best preserved cities in the Caribbean from the time of the sugar trade. Other restoration works are also being carried out across other sites of archaeological value in Cuba, including the Valley of the Sugar Mills and La Torre Iznaga, also declared World Heritage Sites. The are both living reminders of the importance of sugar to the Cuban economy over the centuries. Those visiting the almost 500-year-old town in 2014 after the refurbishment works are finished and the city celebrates its milestone anniversary, will find a fully restored town with plenty of Spanish colonial architecture, underscoring a colonial ambiance that marks the tiny city as ne of greatest holiday attractions in central Cuba. The Trinidad-Sancti Spiritus holiday destination gives priority to the preservation and renovation of the infrastructure of its facilities. One of the best examples of how Cuba looks after the preservation of its most iconic, landmark cities happened last year when tour operators, travel agents and specialised journalists participated in the 8th International Meeting of Nature Tourism, Turnat 2011, an event celebrating the natural preservation of some of the major destinations for eco Cuba holidays.
