Yipsi Moreno Battles to Win Silver Medal

BEIJING, August 20,- Cuba's Yipsi Moreno fought to the end in the Beijing Olympics hammer throw finals and managed a silver medal, the same as in Athens 2004. Aksana Miankova set an Olympic record to win with a 76.34 throw on her sixth attempt and Yipsi said it wasn't only from the Belarusian that she expected stiff competition. "There were four or five very strong athletes, but from the beginning I thought I had a shot at winning." Moreno opened the competition with a foul, followed by a 73.95 throw on her second attempt to put her in third place. On her fifth try she moved into the lead with a 74.70 throw, which she improved on to 75.20 on her last attempt. Moreno's distance was superior to the Olympic record set in Athens by Olga Kuzenkova of Russia (75.02), broken Wednesday by Miankova. China's Zhang Wenxiu finished third, winning the bronze medal with a 74.32 throw.
